Notify Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

The process of altering your course or institute is straightforward, and you won’t need to change your permit. Simply inform IRCC of any changes made to your course or DLI. However, once you decide to discontinue with your current institute, you have a window of 150 days to commence a new course at a different university. Failing to do so will impact the conditions of your study permit.

Steps to Modify Your Course or College

The process of changing your DLI is hassle-free and can be done independently without the need for a representative.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to change your DLI:

  • Create an online account: Even if you applied for the permit offline, create an online account and link your application.
  • Study Permit Number: Find the study permit number starting with the letter “S” at the top right corner of the permit. Additional details may be requested for security reasons.
  • The DLI number of the new institute: Obtain it from the list of designated learning institutions.
  • Student Identification Number (Student ID)
  • Your new institute’s acceptance letter will contain the new student ID.
  • The commencement date at your new college will be provided.

How to Modify Your DLI if You Are Outside Canada?

  • If you are requesting a DLI change from outside Canada and, Your permit application is ongoing: Submit the new letter of acceptance through the IRCC web form.
  • Your permit application is approved: Submit a new study permit application with the new university’s acceptance letter. Pay all necessary fees for the new application.

If the new DLI is in Quebec

  • Obtain a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) if your new institute is in Quebec and the previous university was outside the province.
  • And, if you are studying in Quebec and wish to change the institute, course, or level of study, reach out to the ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration.
